The D2L Learning Management System (LMS) Brightspace recently launched Lumi, an AI-powered tool designed to "transform" how educators build content, assessments, and activities.
Lumi offers three notable features:
Lumi Quiz: Generates quiz questions based on course content.
2. Lumi Idea: Suggests new assignments and discussions aligned with your course material.
3. Lumi Practice: Creates practice questions to reinforce learning.
Based on the preview, Lumi can accelerate course development by generating content for quizzes, discussions, and practice questions.
As tools like Lumi are implemented throughout Learning Management Systems in the education sector, here are some questions educators should consider:
How does the quality of the AI-output compare to the work created by a professor with deep knowledge?
How much effort is required to review and revise the AI-generated output?
What will be the impact of these tools on teaching quality? student learning?
Do I need to communicate to my students that I used Generative AI to develop my course? If yes, how do I cite its usage?
If I can use Generative AI to generate assignments and assessments, should students be allowed to use generative AI tools to complete them?
What is the role of the educators in the Age of Generative AI (Natriello & Chae, 2022)?
