Anthropic's AI Fluency 4D Framework

Faculty receive training about how AI tools fit into teaching and learning. Students, however, have varying levels of experience and little structure or guidance for how to use AI to support their learning. Faculty at SPS share that students tend to arrive with uneven experience and little structure for using AI to support their learning. Some students rely on generative AI without clear judgment, while others avoid it because expectations are unclear.
What Students Are Missing and Why It Matters
According to Anthropic, AI fluency is “the ability to effectively, ethically, and safely understand, evaluate, and collaborate with artificial intelligence systems.” It’s not about getting better answers faster; it's about building better judgment (Dakan & Feller, 2025).
Students can start developing stronger judgment and establishing common expectations by utilizing Anthropic's AI Fluency 4D framework. This simple approach is built upon four interconnected concepts:
Delegation: deciding what AI should and should not do
Description: communicating clearly to get useful results
Discernment: evaluating outputs for accuracy and quality
Diligence: taking responsibility and being transparent about AI use
Without this foundation, students may tend to default to automation (i.e., asking the tool to write an entire essay based on a prompt), which reinforces the very concern faculty are raising: students using AI to complete work rather than to support their thinking.
Start with What Already Exists
One way to address this gap without adding to your workload is to build on resources that already exist. These resources provide options for both hands-on exploration and establishing a common, scalable foundation in AI fluency.
SPARK Lab at NYU Bobst: Located at NYU’s Bobst Library, this lab offers hands-on support for exploring emerging technologies, including generative AI, where students can test how an AI tool explains a course concept, get peer guidance on refining prompts, or explore how emerging technologies can support a class project.
NYU Google AI for Education Accelerator: The Google AI for Education Accelerator courses are available free of charge to eligible NYU students, administrators, and alumni. This free access offers a significant opportunity for students to develop valuable skills and enhance their career prospects.
Anthropic Academy: Faculty can leverage these structured, free online courses to establish a common foundation in AI fluency across a course, as they introduce AI fluency in ways that align with academic work.
AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations: Provides an overview of how to work with AI effectively and responsibly.
AI Fluency for Students: Provides a more direct focus on learning, including how to use AI as a coach, reflect on understanding, and stay in control of the work.
A Simple Way to Integrate
One practical approach is to include AI fluency as part of a Week 1 Lesson or course onboarding module. Instead of adding new content later, you can establish expectations at the start.
For example, you might ask students to:
Review the course syllabus to better understand expectations around AI Use
Explore an NYU resource such as the NYU SPARK Lab or enroll in the Google AI for Education Accelerator program.
Complete a short AI fluency course and submit a certificate of completion through NYU Brightspace (NYU login required).
Complete a brief reflection on what they learned.
These activities might take 30–60 minutes, can be implemented as prework (NYU login required), and give you a consistent starting point for setting AI expectations and building fluency across your course.
