In this sample Global Sport assignment, students read different articles about the same topic, then listen to a Gemini Notebook generated podcast about the articles. Students meet in groups to deepen their understanding by discussing their articles and critiquing what the AI generated podcast got right and wrong.
AI Tool
Gemini Notebook - Audio Overview
Summary
The purpose of this exercise is to do a deep reading of an article, then analyze and critique the output of an AI tool using the knowledge from their deep reading. Students will critique outputs from an AI tool and compare and contrast their own analysis to that of the AI tool.
Notes for the Professor
You will need to create a Notebook using your articles and use it to generate an AI podcast.
Assignment Description & Instructions
Task. Each student will read one of several articles about the NFL’s “Rooney Rule” and become an expert on their assigned article. The professor will assign an AI generated podcast about all articles for students to listen to. Students will meet with two others who read the other articles to discuss the key takeaways of the articles and what the AI podcast did or didn’t get right.
Step 1: Select and assign articles.
Select several articles all offering differing perspectives or information about one topic, such as diversity hiring in the NFL and the “Rooney Rule.” Divide students into groups and assign all students in each group one of the articles to read.
Step 2: Generate and assign an AI Podcast
Create a Notebook (NYU Login Required; request access) using your articles. Then generate an AI audio overview podcast using the Deep Dive feature. Assign the podcast as listening content for students. Provide guiding questions for critical listening with a focus on key ideas or controversies.
Step 3: Students meet in expert groups
Students meet together with their classmates who read the same article. They can check their understanding and discuss what they learned from the article, answer guiding questions and solidify their knowledge.
Step 4: Students meet with others to discuss all articles and critique the AI podcast
Remake student groups into groups so each group features one student who is an expert in each article. Students take turns sharing their insights into their assigned article, then discuss their opinions of the AI podcast.
Consider questions like:
What did the audio overview capture well?
Did the audio overview add anything that wasn’t explicitly mentioned in your exper groups? If so, how do you feel about what was added?
Did the audio overview help you make any connections you missed before?
What did the audio overview miss or overlook?
Was there anything the audio overview should have spent more time on?
Overall thoughts on the quality of the audio overview. Would you recommend it as a learning tool?
Step 5: Whole class discussion
Bring students back together to share highlights from their discussions.
Options for Adaptations
Include different podcast types. Generate several different podcasts using Gemini Notebook’s audio overview options for Brief, Critique and Debate as well as Deep Dive styled podcast outputs. Assign each group one particular type of podcast. Feedback with the whole class to discuss the different podcasts and strengths and weaknesses of each generated podcast format.
