AI Tool

Summary

Students interact with an Acquisition Editor Gem by submitting a book proposal for sale, engaging in dialogue with the Gem, and sharing reflections on the experience.

Notes for the Professor

You will need to create an AI Acquisition Editor using Google Gem for this assignment (NYU login required).

Assignment Description & Instructions

Task: Create a pitch proposal to sell a book to an AI Acquisition Editor. Submit your proposal and prepare revisions and responses to the Editor’s questions and feedback.

Step 1: Analysis

Analyze an existing publisher’s catalog and submission guidelines to understand market needs. Then craft a compelling book concept and draft a pitch proposal.

Step 2: The Pitch

Access the Gem and submit your initial pitch proposal. The Gem functions as a highly critical, market-savvy acquisitions editor and is designed to ask questions about your pitch so you can identify the strengths and weaknesses of your pitch proposal.

Take note of what you learn from your interactions with the Editor for your reflection.

Spend at least 10 minutes interacting with the AI Editor.

Step 3: Reflection

Write a reflection on your interaction with the AI Agent that addresses the following questions.

  • How did you feel about your interaction with the AI Editor? What, if anything, surprised you?

  • Was the AI Agent helpful in highlighting what you did well and what you could improve?

  • Was there anything from the AI Agent that did not feel helpful? Explain

  • What changes will you make to your proposal as a result of your interaction with the AI Agent?

Step 4: Discuss with classmates

Meet with a group of classmates to discuss and debrief your experiences with the AI Editor. What was it like pitching to the Gem and what did you like and/or dislike about the experience? Post a summary of your discussion to the course site in NYU Brightspace

Submission Requirements

  • Your original pitch proposal

  • Your reflection paper

  • A copy of your conversation with the AI Agent

Options for Adaptations

  • Other kinds of high stakes interactions: Create a Gem for a simulated interview, pitch or other high stakes interaction in any content area. Use Gem creation best practices to ensure the Gem is as effective as possible. Include clear guidelines for students on how to interact with Gem.

  • AI critical reflection: Students can benefit from evaluating AI tools and their effectiveness and reflecting on their impact on learning. This can be done in-class synchronously or outside the classroom asynchronously and augmented by discussion and comparison of experiences.
