Peer Feedback using Google Forms

At NYU SPS, group projects (NYU login required) set up students for professional success by learning to work in teams, applying knowledge and skills, and benefiting from peer-to-peer feedback.
Asking students to work together and provide each other feedback can be sensitive. Set clear expectations for group assignments, and plan for how students will reflect on the process and on their peers’ contributions. Check with your NYU SPS Academic Leadership to learn about departmental policies related to group projects and grading.
Anonymous Peer Evaluations using Google Forms
Google forms allow you to easily collect anonymous peer feedback. Students can provide simple quantitative and qualitative feedback on their fellow colleagues’ participation at a checkpoint or as a final evaluation.
Tabulate data to include as part of a student’s group project participation grade. Note: Professors should always be assigning students’ official project grades.
Suggested Steps
Create a new Google form.

Navigate to Settings and select “Do not collect email addresses” if you prefer anonymous evaluations.

Create your Group Peer Feedback survey with:
Dropdown with students’ names to select in the group
Likert (scale of 1-5) question(s)
Open ended question(s)
For example:

When you publish the survey, select responders as “Anyone with the link.”

To create a peer evaluation form for the next group, copy the Google form survey and simply change the names of students (repeat as needed).

Copy the responder’s link for each group survey and share it with select students to complete.

When students complete their peer evaluation surveys, generate an Excel report by navigating to “Responses” in each survey and clicking, “View in Sheets.”

Integrate individual student project participation into a student’s group project grade as you wish.

Proactive expectations of accountability can motivate students to contribute meaningfully to their group projects and can empower them to advance one another’s learning.
